27 The White Box This is a historic building in the heart of Seville that hosts the flagship office of La Caixa Bank in that city. It was a spectacular building, listed for its historical value, but it had partially fallen into disuse because of its large size: 1,600 square-meters The studio of Francesc Rife was responsible for the interior design project that converted the building to its new use, with a large central courtyard as the protagonist in the project. To cover and eliminate its existing central fountain as well as restoring a floor of white inlaid marble were the challenges facing Rife, whose primarily objective was to add personality to the space. The reflection of 187 lamps After covering the patio, 187 hanging lamps were suspended 12 meters high from each of the spreaders of the grid which holds the translucent polycarbonate cover. The patio comprises a two-story building delimited by arcades that surround the perimeter. A suspended optical and silkscreened blurred white glass allows on one hand to make a visual look onto the top floor; on the other hand, it allows the suspended lamps to reflect infinitely thus allowing the integration of the concept of the white “box” with the same insignia of the other offices of La Caixa. This space houses the waiting and work areas, furniture packs, self service card and the ‘Open Line’ table. The patio serves as a central distributor for the remaining building with a central pedestrian access from Sierpes Street. A warmer area The left side is where one sees the Banking zone and then the main window area with different settings, according to the marketing campaigns of the financial institution. Both are integrated into a single element that breaks with the original structure of arches and vaults. This feature allows the space to be scaled to a more humane and warmer dimension, which the wood coated floor also assists. The right wing lets you look at the top of all the arches and vaults and to view the filtered natural light from the windows located on the east side. It accommodates the area dedicated to social work, consisting of a large video wall and a bench. Here and there are yellow hues, semi-closed offices for personal attention, with limiting translucent coated optical glass. Finally, in the zone at the back and highlighted by a large suspended building set at half a person´s height and colored in a blue lintel, one finds the area set aside for personalized attention through the semiopen upholstered screens and integrated oval tables, less rigid than the system traditional desk. This area is where are also located the director’s office and the meeting rooms. For their part, the employees work at the back of the building, in an area called ‘Team Office’ with extendible tables as in an open space.n Zona de espera en el centro del patio / Waiting room in the middle of the patio Las zonas de atención personalizada son más cálidas y menos rígidas que en las oficinas tradicionales / Personal assistance areas are warmer and less stiff than in traditional offices
